Planning a wedding in Chicago? You’re in the right place—and not just geographically.

Chicago offers a dynamic mix of historic charm, modern luxury, and one-of-a-kind city energy that makes it one of the most exciting places to say, “I do.” Whether you’re local or planning from afar, there’s a lot to consider and more to love when it comes to getting married in the Windy City.

As a wedding planner based in Chicago, I’ve helped dozens of couples navigate venue searches, permitting logistics, weather surprises, and helped them find their Chicago wedding style. Here’s a guide to help answer the question “What do you need to get married in Chicago?”

1. Chicago Wedding Venues Are as Diverse as the Neighborhoods

From chic lofts in the West Loop, to luxury hotels on the Magnificent Mile, Chicago’s wedding venues span every style imaginable. Whether you’re looking to host a small Chicago wedding, or a Chicago wedding venue for 300 guests, the city is sure to have a venue that meets your unique vision.

A few types of venues couples love:

Pro tip: Book early—especially for peak months May through October. Chicago venues can book out 12–18 months in advance, particularly those with outdoor spaces or skyline views.

2. Weather is Always Part of the Plan (Even in July)

Chicago’s weather keeps planners on their toes. While summers are gorgeous and fall brings stunning color, it’s wise to expect the unexpected. That’s why every great Chicago wedding includes a solid backup plan.

If you're considering outdoor elements—ceremonies, cocktail hours, rooftop receptions—be sure to:

  • Have a tent or covered space reserved

  • Consider wind and temperature fluctuations (especially near the lake)

  • Work with vendors who are seasoned in quick pivots and city logistics

And yes, it’s totally possible to have a winter wedding here! Cozy indoor venues, candlelight, and snow-dusted photos can be magical.

3. City Logistics Matter: Permits, Parking & Permitted Locations

Hosting a wedding in a public space like a park, beach, or rooftop? You’ll likely need a Chicago Park District permit, and each location has its own guidelines for guest counts, music, and setup times. If you’re looking to take photos at iconic locations like Union Station or Lincoln Park Conservatory, you’ll need a photography permit and a scheduled time to take photos.

Other city considerations:

  • Transportation info for guests: valet, rideshare, or shuttle service

  • Load-in/load-out access for vendors

  • Noise ordinances, especially in residential or mixed-use neighborhoods

  • Accessibility for older guests or out-of-town visitors

This is where having a Chicago-based wedding planner is invaluable—we know the ins and outs of every neighborhood and how to navigate the city’s red tape with ease.

4. The Season You Choose Shapes the Feel of the Day

Here’s how each season plays out in Chicago:

  • Spring: Blooming trees, romantic lighting, and fresh color palettes. April–May can still be chilly, so plan accordingly.

  • Summer: Peak wedding season. Think longer days, lush gardens, and lots of guest travel. Consider shade and cooling for outdoor events.

  • Fall: Arguably the most popular. The city glows in September–October with rich color, crisp air, and ideal temps.

  • Winter: Underappreciated but magical. Think velvet, candlelight, and cozy dinners. Bonus: venue and vendor availability tends to be better.

5. Plan Accordingly For Chicago Events

Chicago plays host to many events throughout the year which can impact your wedding day. From traffic and street closures to increased hotel rates, being aware of these events in advanced will help you plan logistics accordingly and set your guests expectations as they plan their travel. Here is list of some of the major annual events that occur in Chicago:

  • February - Chicago Auto Show

  • March - St. Patrick’s Day (Chicago goes ALL OUT),

  • April - C2E2: Chicago Comic and Entertainment Expo

  • May - Sueños Music Festival, Memorial Day Weekend

  • June - Chicago Pride, Summer Smash Festival,

  • July - Windy City Smokeout, NASCAR Chicago

  • August - Lollapolooza, Chicago Air and Water Show, Chicago Triathlon

  • September - Taste of Chicago, Chicago Gourmet, Mexican Independence Day

  • October - Chicago Marathon

  • November - Magnificent Mile Lights Festival

  • December - Lots of visitors for the holiday season

Be sure to also check if any major music artists have a tour stop in Chicago - which can certainly take over the whole city (see Beyonce)!

6. Chicago Wedding Vendors Bring the Magic (and the Efficiency)

This city is home to some of the most talented wedding professionals in the country. From floral artists and photographers to live musicians and creative caterers, there’s no shortage of incredible people ready to bring your vision to life.

Want a refined floral palette with movement and texture? A bold tablescape design? A second-line band to close the night? There’s a vendor for that—and I can help you find them.

As a wedding planner in Chicago, I curate teams that match your aesthetic, priorities, and personality—so every piece of your day feels cohesive and elevated.

7. Marriage License Basics for Chicago Couples

You’ll need to apply in person at any Cook County Clerk’s office and wait at least 24 hours before you can legally marry. Here’s a quick rundown:

  • Both parties must be present

  • Bring valid photo ID

  • License is valid for 60 days (and only in Cook County)

  • Fee: $60 (as of this writing)

Tip: Schedule your appointment in advance to avoid long wait times, especially during wedding season.

8. Chicago Is a Destination (Even for Locals)

Whether you're from here or planning from out of town, Chicago offers a guest experience that goes beyond the wedding day. Your celebration becomes a weekend your guests will remember—complete with iconic architecture tours, world-class dining, and lakefront strolls.

We often help couples plan welcome events, group excursions, and farewell brunches that showcase the best of the city and make their guests feel like VIPs. We can even help you incorporate Chicago staples into your wedding weekend, like Garretts Popcorn in your welcome bags or as favors!
